The Chinese Room from Kat Zhang on Vimeo.

What is lost in translation when people try to communicate using different languages? As the technology to process natural languages progresses, with the machine as interpreter for humans, is the translation bringing people closer? The Chinese Room questions the role of the computer plays as a medium between humans, the difference between genuine understanding and superficial functioning.

The viewer's face is recognized using trained AI models, but their facial features replaced with oracle bone characters. On the 3D spaces flow the most commonly used Chinese characters and English words.

The installation was part of Babycastles's Year of The Pig exhibition.
